Zona 14 Canopy Café

“Ten of the World’s Coolest Restaurant Interiors” - The Guardian

Outdoor Café | 4,000 sf | Completed 2013 | Zone 14, Guatemala City

Embraced by greenery on all sides, this outdoor terrace café recalls the vernacular of a garden pergola, reimagined to celebrate local craft expertise and tradition.

A light steel structure rises from the reclaimed formaleta wood platform to support nearly one thousand pounds of locally produced and dyed yarn hanging overhead. The hanging yarn skeins, arranged in a vibrant pattern of greens, blues, and golds, is a modern nod to the dyeing process characteristic of pre-columbian textile craft production in the region.

The unconventional use of local material is highlighted by the contrast of minimal, custom furnishings, and combines with the surrounding tropical vegetation and natural light to create a palpable feeling of nature and of connection to the history of the place.
