Parque O2

Urban Renewal / Public Space | Completed 2019 | Polideportivo de Aranjuez, San José, Costa Rica

A field of colorful bamboo sticks activates the existing complexities within the public space of Polideportivo Park. Designed as part of our FUNdaMENTAL Design Build Initiative, the project creates new gathering spaces that blur the spatial boundaries between different users.

The project connects various components of the site which are situated at different topological, social, and environmental levels. The site contains a high degree of complexity, located at the intersection of a railway train track and adjacent informal settlement, a contaminated river, and a weekly luxury farmer’s market hosted in the lower part of the park.

The design establishes a spatial and visual connection between the different levels of the site by installing a spread field of colorful bamboo sticks that links the main nodes of the park and the railway path. The project reshapes the terrain, landscaping the intervention zone with 11 mounds of varying shapes and sizes. These mounds form the foundation for the bamboo sticks and also serve as places for visitors to play, rest, and gather.
