Playa Chomo

Site-specific Installation | May - Nov 2016 | Centro Cultural Miguel Asturias, Zone 1, Guatemala City

Playa Chomo (meaning Connection Beach) is a temporary pavilion located at the base of the Centro Cultural Miguel Asurias, a disused green area in the center of Guatemala City that fronts the national theater.

The inaugural project of our self-initiated annual design-build program, the goal of the three-month process was to spark awareness of the potential of the site and to initiate the first step in a long process of civic and cultural renewal. A team of international participants constructed a colorful canopy using recycled elastic ribbons to shelter programmed cultural events, concerts, and resting areas. A gravel pathway runs through a framed interior path, guiding the public from the street to the theater grounds above.
